German Shepherd
- The German Shepherd is among the larger breeds in the Herding Group with males weight averaging between 65 and 90 lbs. standing 24 to 26 inches tall while females weighing in at 50 to 70 lbs. with a height of 22 to 24 inches tall. Their life span falls between 7 and 10 years old…normal for breed their size.

- Also as a result of their size, they are prone to bloat so be cautious of heavy activity after eating to help prevent stomach flip. Most of the common health issues facing the Shepherd are from inbreeding during the early years of the breed’s creation. One of those is hip & elbow dysplasia leading sever pain in later life and could cause arthritis. Furthermore, German Shepard Dogs have higher than average incidence of Van Willebrand Disease, a common inherited bleeding disorder.
- As with all dogs regular teeth cleanings are a must especially for older dogs. Their teeth can become just as sensitive as humans. The Shepherds large open ears can also be prone to infection so keep up with regular veterinary visits and your dog should have a good long life.
- As with all pet services whether the Breeder you choose, the veterinarian, Professional Groomer, and boarding ensure you have thoroughly vetted the people. Visit the Groomer facility and staff; see exactly where your dog will sleep if boarding and find out how much time they will spend with your dog – feeding time, how often do they take dogs for a walk, etc.
